We are all in this together!

Today we found out that Lois Smidt’s organization is changing its name to “A Community That Works”.   It is based on Radical Hospitality.   Radical because it includes everyone because we need everyone’s input to figure out how best to build community and break the bonds of isolation.  We are making friends on purpose, appreciating contributions made by those in every walk of life.  This is all about everyone’s need for Money, Friends, and Meaning.  We acknowledge that we all deal with some kind of poverty, dispelling the myth of self sufficiency and recognizing that we are interdependent.

Unlike social services we are building relationships based on reciprocity.  There is hope that we can do something personally and as a community.  There are no labels, no rigidity of roles, no time limits, no eligibility requirements, and no mandates.  Group meetings have an open door.  Great effort is taken to make everyone feel welcome and that they belong.   Everything has to go through the filter of “How would I treat a friend?”

“I believe in the essential unity of all that lives.  Therefore I believe that if one person gains the whole world gains, and if one person falls, the world falls to that extent.”

~ Mohandas K. Ghandi

In other words, we are all in this together!

  1. Sounds like you have had an informative & inspiring day. The name change for Lois Smidt’s group challenges us to consider “community” from a completely different perspective. I like that.
Looking forward to tomorrows highlights…..stay warm!
